Boris Johnson has sat down for a no holds barred interview with GB News – and championed the channel as the home of free speech.
The former Prime Minister gave a detailed interview about his new book, Unleashed, to Camilla Tominey in an interview to be broadcast on Sunday.
During their discussion, Mr Johnson said: “I’m a great fan of GB News, and I have been since your inception. All I hope is that the footprint of GB News will grow. More people will understand it’s a great addition to our broadcasting.”
The interview comes as reports revealed how Mr Johnson’s memoir, which is published next week, is already topping the Amazon UK Books Best Sellers list, outselling recently published novels by Sally Rooney and Richard Osman.
Unleashed covers the politician’s career, from Mayor of London to Foreign Secretary, to Prime Minister.
The book made headlines this week over its claims that the risk to peace in Northern Ireland from Brexit was exaggerated and was used by opponents “to trap the UK in the EU”, the revelation that many of Johnson’s family members urged him to back Remain, and Johnson’s insistence he would have won the July election.
In his interview with GB News, Mr Johnson also weighed in on Labour’s surrender of the Chagos Islands, branding the move “total nonsense”.
He said that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Government are “trying to look like the good guys”.
Johnson said: “It’s crazy. I urge viewers of GB News to get out your maps, get out your atlases, check out the Chagos Islands, see where they are, and see where Mauritius is.
“It’s nonsense. It’s total nonsense. Why are we doing this? Sheer political correctness, a desire to look like the good guys. The desire to look as they were unbundling the last relics of our empire. It’s nonsense.
“It’s a bad idea in hard geopolitical terms because the base in Diego Garcia is, I’m sure you know, for all our viewers know, is of huge strategic importance for the US, for the West. And it’s a key component of the Anglo-American alliance. It’s one of the things we bring to the table, and has been for decades that base.
“Why are we trading away our sovereignty over Chagos? Completely the wrong thing to do.”
