Cornwall Airport has been named among the best in the UK for health and safety. The Newquay-based transport hub scooped the top prize in the small airports category at the AirportsUK Health & Safety Week Awards.

The ceremony, which is supported by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), celebrates outstanding health and safety initiatives in airports across the country.

Cornwall Airport’s submission showcased its initiatives across three areas: personal protective equipment (PPE); working at height; and airside environment safety for staff and passengers.

Andrew Boomer, operations director of Cornwall Airport Newquay, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this prestigious award. Health and safety are paramount in everything we do, and this accolade is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team.

“At Cornwall Airport Newquay, we strive to create a safe and secure environment for all our passengers, staff, and partners, and it’s fantastic to see those efforts recognised on a national level.”

Baroness Ruby McGregor-Smith CBE, chair of AirportsUK, added: “The health and safety of passengers, staff, and local communities is the number one priority for airports across the country. These Health and Safety Awards highlight the ongoing commitment of our airports to create healthier, safer aviation environments. Congratulations to all of the winners and those who were highly commended.”

Cornwall Council announced earlier this year it was seeking a private partner to invest in the transport hub. In August, the local authority confirmed that asset manager Adynaton Asset Management was its preferred commercial partner.

As well as airport operations, the proposed joint venture will target the development of the land surrounding the airport. A land utilisation blueprint will form part of the partnership deal both of which are expected to be presented to the cabinet this autumn.
