The Avon Bridge on Brunel Way (A3029) will be partially closed overnight for six nights in October. The closures will allow Bristol City Council to carry out a principal inspection of the bridge, as part of the local authority’s ongoing maintenance.
The work will take place over two phases, which will see one side of the dual carriageway closed during each phase and a signposted diversion put in place. The first closure will be southbound, and will be in place for three nights between 9pm and 6am, from Tuesday, October 8, until Thursday, October 10.
The second closure will be northbound, for three nights from Tuesday, October 15 until Thursday, October 17. The timings of the closure will be the same – between 9pm and 6am each night.
The northbound diversion will go from Brunel Way onto Jessop Underpass, Clift House Road and Coronation Road, across Bedminster Bridge, along Commercial Road and Cumberland Road, then onto Brunel Lock Road.
The southbound diversion will go from Brunel Lock Road onto Cumberland Road and Commercial Road, across Bedminster Bridge, along Coronation Road, Clift House Road and Jessop Underpass, then onto Brunel Way.
During the northbound closure (15-17 October), the bus gate on Cumberland Road will be suspended to allow normal vehicular traffic to use this route in both directions. People intending to travel overnight on Brunel Way are warned to expect some delays throughout the two closure periods.
Councillor Ed Plowden, chair of the transport & connectivity committee, said: “This is a major route to and from south Bristol, which includes Bristol Airport and Ashton Gate Stadium. As the Cumberland Basin flyover is nearing the end of its working life, it needs to be inspected and repaired on an ongoing basis, while a decision is made on its long-term future.
“We’ve planned in this critical inspection at night so it will have as little impact as possible and will avoid big events at the stadium. However, we recommend planning ahead and leaving more time for your journeys or finding alternative routes for the one-way closures. Thank you for your patience while we continue to maintain this aging part of our transport infrastructure.”
