The Met Office has issued a weather warning for heavy rain across Northern Ireland on Wednesday evening.

Outbreaks of downfalls will be consistent and are expected to persist through the night and perhaps much of Thursday morning.

The overly wet conditions are expected to lead to some flooding and transport disruption in places.

Spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer, and bus and train services are also potentially going to be affected with journey times taking longer than usual.

Eastern counties in Northern Ireland will see the largest rainfall amounts, especially across Co Down and Co Antrim, where 30 to 50 mm is likely quite widely, and perhaps as much as 60 to 80 mm across high ground such as the Mournes.

Despite recent dry weather, this may lead to some flooding and transport disruption, the national forecaster said.

However, the rain is expected to slowly ease through the late morning period.

Residents across NI have been advised to check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit.

The best chance of avoiding delays will be by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and amending your travel plans if necessary.

The Met Office added that people should consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items in case of power cuts, which could be possible tonight.

Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area.
