Police have arrested a man after emergency services attended the scene of a serious road crash in Co Down.

It’s understood the incident happened on the Crossgar Road close to the village of Shrigley a few mile outside Killyleagh.

Several emergency vehicles including a police helicopter were tasked to the scene shortly before 7pm.

The road has been closed in both directions.

Police investigating a collision in Crossgar this evening, Sunday 22 September, said they have made an arrest.

Sergeant Ritchie said: “We received a report of a car on its roof in the Ballytrim Road area at around 6.45pm.

“The driver made off from the scene. With the assistance of our Air Support colleagues, he was located nearby a short time later.

“A passenger in the vehicle reported minor injuries. The driver, a man aged 35, was arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol, driving while disqualified and failing to stop, remain and report. He remains in custody at this time.

“Thankfully, no other vehicles were involved in this collision, and we are grateful that the consequences were not much more serious.”

Sergeant Ritchie continued: “The Ballytrim Road has been closed to facilitate vehicle recovery.

“We would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the collision, or who saw a black BMW 520d Sport in the area at the time leading up to the collision, to contact police.
