Dominic Solanke has aimed a dig at Tottenham’s critics after scoring his first goal for the club in their 3-1 win over Brentford on Saturday.

The forward cancelled out Bryan Mbeumo’s early opener, with further goals from Brennan Johnson and James Maddison giving Spurs all three points.

Tottenham have been criticised at times this season, much to the annoyance of Ange Postecoglou.

The Australian snapped in an interview with Sky Sports last week following their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, having previously failed to beat Newcastle and Leicester.

Solanke has, however, insisted that Tottenham have deserved more from their early-season fixtures.

And the former Bournemouth, Liverpool and Chelsea star was pleased to deliver his first goal for the club following his arrival from the Cherries back in the summer.

“[It feels] fantastic. To get the win here meant a lot to all of us,” he said.

“We have had some great performances to start the season but haven’t managed to match that [with a win] so today we wanted to mix them both together. Today we did that.”

He added: “As a striker it’s always important to get that first goal and I managed to get that today which I’m happy with so hopefully I can continue in this way.

“We have been playing well all season but sometimes you don’t get the results you deserve, but if you keep going, keep sticking at it and playing the way we want to play it’s going to happen.”

Postecoglou also spoke out after his side’s win.

The Tottenham boss has now guided his side to successive victories following their nervy 2-1 win over Coventry City in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

And Postecoglou was pleased with the way Tottenham performed as they recovered from an early setback to consign Brentford to defeat.

“It was a good win, a good performance,” he said.

“Our performances have been good all year but today we got the result as well which is the most pleasing bit.

“We should have won by a fair bit more but we still got the job done.

“You’re always keeping the opposition in the game [at 2-1] and it’s been the story of our season so far.

“It [Maddison’s goal] was a quality goal from three of our four captains, who I think got involved in it. It was important to finish the game off.”

Solanke has big shoes to fill at Tottenham, having signed as a belated replacement for Harry Kane.

Kane quit the north London giants last summer to join Bundesliga titans Bayern Munich.

And Postecoglou was buzzing after seeing his new striker open his account for the club.

“Dom worked his socks off. He was gone at the end,” he continued.

“He is still getting back to match fitness, but I know he is going to provide so much for us in that central position.

“All strikers love goals so it will be a great moment for him especially at home.”
