BBC Breakfast viewers were quick to spot a glaring error during Saturday morning’s episode (September 21).
Presenters Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty had just introduced a segment on Strictly Come Dancing, featuring reporter David Sillito catching up with the contestants ahead of the evening’s show.
Among those interviewed were Toyah Willcox and her dance partner Neil Jones. Sillito asked Toyah if she had any “qualms” about joining the show amid allegations of bullying.
“Strictly’s been in the news over the last few months. Did you have any qualms when you said yes? ” he queried.
“I’m very sorry that people have had a negative experience,” Toyah began. “All I can say so far: this has been the best experience of my life. We are being looked after beautifully,” reports OK!.
However, despite the smooth interview, sharp-eyed fans noticed that Toyah’s name was misspelled in the banner that appeared during the interview. Instead of Toyah Willcox, it read Toyah Wilcox.
“Nice to see the item on Strictly Come Dancing. Shame the BBC got Toyah’s name misspelled,” one irked viewer pointed out.
The segment later returned to Toyah and her motivations for joining Strictly. The singer and actress, who has enjoyed a 45-year career in the spotlight, said she wanted to prove age was no barrier.
“I feel young, I don’t feel old and I think people want to feel that way. That’s why I’m doing it, to say ‘Look I’m a pensioner, if I can do it, you can do it.'”.
