Brampton officials have issued landlords $83,500 worth of fines for 611 administrative penalties since Jan. 1, under a residential rental program.

Bylaw officers have conducted 4,700 inspections and issued more than 2,200 rental licences under the program, which applies to landlords with one to four rental units in the city’s downtown area.

Before the program, smaller landlords were not subject to the same regulations as larger ones.

“Safety in our communities is non-negotiable, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring every renter in Brampton has a safe place to call home,” said Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown in a statement Monday.

Smaller landlords must now comply with Bramptons property standards bylaws, as well as provisions in fire and building codes.

“Full compliance with property standard bylaws and fire and building codes is not optional,” insisted Brown. “It is a mandatory requirement when it comes to providing a secure living environment for all residents.”

City officials are slated to  present a report Brampton’s municipal politicians about the issue on Wednesday.

Landlords can now take advantage of a 50% discount on the $300 registration fee for the program until Sept. 30. They’ll have to pay the full price after that.
