The president of the Toronto Police Association is stepping down.

Jon Reid says after 36 years of policing in Toronto that he will not seek re-election as president of the TPA.

“It has been my greatest honour to serve our members, first as a Uniform Field Director for eight years and then as president for almost four years. With our strong team of directors and staff, I am very proud of what we have accomplished,” Reid said Monday in a statement posted on social media site X.

“We navigated through a global pandemic, secured workable shift schedules, and positioned the TPA as a national leader in police advocacy, guiding conversations and influencing decision-makers on issues such as police funding and bail reform.”

Reid said he is disappointed that securing negotiated collective agreements “has been impossible.”

He said he believes that with arbitration and this change in TPA brass, the TPA can secure a compensation and benefits package that respects the work of its members.

“Our board will continue to see this process through, and I am committed to serving as president until a successor has been chosen through our election process this fall. It is simply time for me to move on,” Reid said.

“Like our members, I have spent countless days, nights, weekends, and holidays away from my family. It is time for me to give back to them. I want to thank my police association colleagues from across Canada.”

Reid also thanked  the 8,000 members of the Toronto Police Service for their dedication and professionalism.
