In what should have been a special day, Meredith Gaudreau was again left with a reminder of her recent tragedy.
The widow of Johnny Gaudreau posted an emotional tribute to the NHL star on their third wedding anniversary on Wednesday, calling it “one of the best days of my life.”
Meredith posted the message with a carousel of photos from the wedding, reception and honeymoon.
“I never post this much but John deserves it,” Meredith wrote in the caption. “3 years ago today I became yours forever. One of the best days of my life, including the night we got engaged and the days we brought our babies into the world.
“The day I met you I remember saying to myself, omg I’m going to marry him. And every day after that kept getting better and better.
“I love you forever John and I am so proud to be your wife.”
Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver while riding their bikes last Thursday.
Driver Sean Higgins was in a New Jersey court on Thursday morning to face a judge.
Higgins had his detention hearing pushed back to Sept. 13 by Judge Michael J. Silvanio, who explained that he met with the accused’s lawyers and prosecutors, and both sides agreed to move the date.
The postponement is in order to file “exhibits and potential legal briefs” related to the case.
Police say that Higgins, a financial officer at a rehab company and married father of two daughters, slammed his Jeep Grand Cherokee into the backs of the Gaudreau brothers as they were cycling in their native Salem County, N.J. the night before their sister’s wedding last week.
Higgins was suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and has been charged with two counts of death by auto.
According to the criminal complaint obtained by The Associated Press, Higgins told authorities he drank “5-6 beers” prior to the crash and admitted to consuming alcohol while driving.
Tributes have been pouring in over social media for the two brothers and fans and players in both Calgary and Columbus attended vigils at their respective hockey arenas on Wednesday.
