A teenager arrested in connection with a fatal crash on St Patrick’s Day in Co Donegal has been released without charge.

Two men aged in their 60s were hit by the car on Lower Main Street in Letterkenny at around 3am on Monday.

One of the men died in Letterkenny University Hospital later on Monday.

The other man was airlifted to Galway University Hospital for treatment.

The driver of the car involved in the incident – a male aged in his late teens – was arrested at the scene of the collision.

The incident was referred to the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) because of an earlier interaction between the driver of the car and gardai.

On Tuesday, gardai said he had been released from custody without charge.

A garda spokesman said: “A male in his teens arrested in connection with this investigation has been released without charge.

“Files will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions and Garda Youth Diversion Bureau.”

Gardai appealed for witnesses to come forward.

They asked anyone with dashcam footage from the area of the Dry Arch Roundabout and Oldtown Road between 2.30am and 3.30am to make it available.

The St Patrick’s Day parade planned for Letterkenny on Monday was cancelled as a mark of respect.

Gardai said investigations are ongoing.
