A man has denied charges of causing a public nuisance and trespassing after climbing Elizabeth Tower while holding a Palestinian flag.

Daniel Day from Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex, is accused of scaling the tower which holds Big Ben in Westminster on the morning of March 8.

The 29-year-old appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court where he pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Day is facing allegations of intentionally or recklessly causing a public nuisance and trespassing on a protected site.

The incident occurred at the iconic London landmark, which houses the famous Big Ben bell.

During the 15-minute hearing, Day spoke only to confirm his identity and enter his pleas.

The 29-year-old defendant was dressed in yellow-and-blue trousers and a black T-shirt as he appeared in the dock.

The court heard allegations that Day had climbed and remained on the Elizabeth Tower while displaying a Palestinian flag.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court was told that the incident took place on the morning of March 8. Day firmly denied both charges brought against him during the brief court appearance.

The case has drawn attention as the Elizabeth Tower, commonly known as Big Ben, is one of Britain’s most recognisable landmarks and a protected site.

Supporters in the public gallery called out words of encouragement as Day left the dock after the hearing.

“Stay strong, Dan” and “we love you” were shouted as he was led away.

Around a dozen pro-Palestine demonstrators also gathered in support of Day outside Westminster Magistrates’ Court.

The protesters waved Palestinian flags and beat a drum that could be heard from inside the building.

The case comes amid ongoing pro-Palestine protests across the UK in recent months.

Following the court appearance, Day was remanded in custody by the magistrate. He will next appear at Southwark Crown Court on April 14 for a further hearing month.
