A man has been charged followed an incident in Co Down on Saturday in which another man suffered “deep lacerations” to his head and body.

Yesterday, there were reports of an incident in the Burren Meadows area of Newcastle involving around five people.

Police confirmed one man was taken to hospital “with deep lacerations to his head and body” and that the wounds were caused by a “broken bottle”.

In an updated statement on Sunday morning, police confirmed a 27-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

They said the man is due to appear before Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.
