With the Rhondda Valleys in South Wales often associated with the coal mining industry, their natural beauty is frequently overlooked. While locals know the scenic routes that allow you to explore the valleys’ hilltops, some may be surprised to learn that one of the area’s most popular walks is in fact nestled within the site of an old colliery.

Cwm Clydach Country Park, also known as Cambrian or Clydach Lakes, is a 166-acre park located on the site of the old Cambrian colliery, an area of outstanding natural beauty. The park is a favourite among dog walkers and families, featuring a picturesque “bottom” lake full of wildlife.

And if you fancy a bit of a further trek, there is also a second “secret” mini lake.

As you stroll around the open lake, surrounded by birds, it’s hard to imagine that just over 60 years ago, this site was home to the Cambrian Colliery. Nature has remarkably reclaimed one of the world’s most heavily mined areas, transforming it into a serene oasis.

Taking a circular walk around the large “bottom” lake, you’ll find plenty of benches to sit and take in the views, as well as geese and ducks to feed. A small island in the lake is home to a variety of bird species, reports Wales Online.

If you make the trip to the more secluded “top lake”, surrounded by woodland, you might even catch a glimpse of the elusive Kingfisher. And, if you venture to the very top, you’ll discover a hidden lake, where a waterfall appears after heavy rainfall.

As you embark on your walk, you’ll come across a poignant tribute to the men and boys who sadly lost their lives in the Cambrian Colliery disasters of 1905 and 1965. The site features a wheel, coal dram, and coal shaft lift cage, serving as a solemn reminder of those who once worked in the mine.

Signposts are also present to indicate the depth of the historic mine shafts.

In 2021, this stunning spot was named the second official country park in Rhondda Cynon Taff (RCT), following in the footsteps of Dare Valley Country Park in Aberdare.

The walking trail offers more than just scenic beauty; at the base of the “bottom” lake, there’s a charming cafe with complimentary parking.

Whether it is a place to relax after you’ve enjoyed your walk or somewhere to fuel up beforehand, there is plenty of food to enjoy at the Cambrian Lakeside Café Bar. They offer everything from Sunday roasts and Welsh curries to baguettes, jacket potatoes, as well as coffee and cakes.
