Kate Garraway has spoke candidly about the heartbreaking aspects of grief and the unexpected triggers that can reignite her emotions.

On Friday’s episode of Good Morning Britain, 57-year-old Kate alongside co-presenter Rob Rinder were joined by Hairy Bikers’ Si King, who discussed his feelings of loss for his best friend and fellow TV chef Dave Myers, who sadly died in 2024 at the age of 66.

This conversation led Kate to reflect on her own grief following the tragic loss of her husband Derek Draper, who passed away last year at 56.

Kate expressed: “Grief isn’t linear, is it? We talk a lot, don’t we, about the stages of grief and you go back and forth with it. I find often one of the triggers because Dave sadly passed away not long after my husband.

“You and I have talked about this together but one of the triggers is actually smells, sights and sounds. Do you find yourself, when you’re making a recipe, that you devised together, just having a little moment and thought of him?”, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Si responded emotionally, stating, “You know Kate, I’ve often said just because Dave’s passed doesn’t necessarily mean he stops being my best friend” which moved Kate to respond: “That’s a lovely thought.”

Derek sadly passed away on 3 January 2024 aged 56, nearly four years after he became ill with multiple complications due to coronavirus.

Taking to Instagram at the time, Kate shared the heartbreaking announcement as she penned: “I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away.

“As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications.

“Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed.

“I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible.

“Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life.”

Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV X.
