Volodymyr Zelensky should resign after “losing the trust” of President Trump, according to a US political commentator.
Speaking on GB News, Daniel McCarthy told Steven Edginton that Zelensky lacks a mandate to govern the war-stricken nation.
The ex-comedian secured a landslide victory in 2019 with 73 per cent of the vote, but with martial law in effect since 24 February 2022, Ukraine has not held another election since.
But McCarthy thinks Zelensky’s current approach is blocking the road to peace.

He told GB News: “He’s lost President Trump’s trust for one thing. There’s also been too much of an intermixture of Zelensky’s own pride and the state of the war itself.
“That’s going to be bad for Ukraine and bad for enemies trying to help Ukraine because Zelensky is standing in the way.”

Steven put it to McCarthy that many feel Trump is trying to “appease” Russian President Vladimir Putin, akin to what we saw with Germany before World War Two.
But the commentator said the assessment is inaccurate, arguing: “Obviously, we have been supplying Ukraine with the means to defend against Vladimir Putin for many years now.
“We have reached a position where the war is virtually a stalemate and if it goes on, Ukraine will not be in a better position to ask for more than what they can get right now.
“This is the best time to call off the war and strike the best peace bargain possible. If it continues, you’re either going to get more killing and the same killing or a worse deal.

“Russia is a much bigger country with many more minerals.”
Zelensky has agreed to America’s terms for a ceasefire after a breakthrough in talks between Ukrainian and US officials in Saudi Arabia.
Kyiv said it was ready to accept a proposed 30-day ceasefire but warned Russia will need to do the same.
The focus is now on Vladimir Putin, who is yet to agree to the terms.
Trump said the US had received “some positive messages” adding: “We have people going to Russia right now”.
