Prince William has issued a message of support to Aston Villa ahead of their major Champions League clash against Belgian side Club Brugge this evening.

Aston Villa are bidding to reach the quarter-finals of the prestigious European football competition.


Villa go into the match as clear favourites having won the first leg 3-1 in Belgium.

Aston Villa have not lost a Champions League home match this season having secured three wins and one draw from their four league phase matches at Villa Park.

Prince William attended both the Bayern Munich and Celtic matches in Birmingham earlier this season as well as making a trip to Monaco to support Villa away from home.

The Prince of Wales, who is expected to be in attendance at tonight’s last-16 second-leg match, stopped off at Aston Villa’s training ground to speak with the players on Tuesday.

William was on his way to a royal engagement when he met with the Villa players.

The royal has taken to social media to share pictures of the meeting along with a message of support for the team.

William wrote on Instagram: “Great to pop in to see @avfcofficial yesterday ahead of tonight’s Champions League game!”

He added: “Up the Villa!” which is term used by Aston Villa fans to express support for the club.

Prince William posted pictures of him greeting Aston Villa players including Morgan Rogers and Jacob Ramsey.

Both Rogers and Ramsey will be hoping Thomas Tuchel names them in his first England squad since taking over as head coach of the Three Lions, which will be announced on Friday.

Last month, Prince William met with Tuchel in his role as patron of the Football Association.

A Kensington Palace source said that the Prince of Wales discussed Villa’s excellent form in the Champions League with England men’s head coach.

Later that day, Tuchel was pictured watching Aston Villa take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
