King Charles welcomed officers from the Canadian parliament to Buckingham Palace on Wednesday afternoon.

The monarch, who is also King of Canada, held an audience with Gregory Peters, Usher of the Black Rod of the Senate of Canada, and Senate Speaker Raymonde Gagne.

During the meeting, His Majesty is understood to have discussed national and international topics of great concern.

The King is said to have delivered a warm exchange of greetings in both French and English.

The audience took place amid ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States.

Incoming Canadian prime minister Mark Carney has pledged to maintain retaliatory tariffs until the US commits to free trade after US President Donald Trump threatened to double planned tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium from 25 per cent to 50 per cent, but later halted the plan.

The audience lasted approximately 30 minutes, during which topics of great concern to all parties were discussed.

The meeting was held for a special purpose – to present Peters with a new ceremonial sword, which was commissioned by the Senate in the King’s honour to mark the change of reign.

Charles is said to have shared his personal thanks for what was described as “such a thoughtful gesture” as he bestowed the sword on Peters.

The ceremonial presentation highlights the continuing formal relationship between the monarchy and Canada.

The King’s role as Canada’s head of state remains an important symbolic connection between the two nations.

Earlier this month, Charles met outgoing Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on March 3.

This meeting came just a day after Charles received Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Sandringham, where the monarch was hailed for showing solidarity with Zelensky by warmly welcoming him.

During the King’s meeting with Trudeau, the challenges Canada faces with its nearest neighbour were said to be high on the agenda.

Support for Ukraine was also reportedly discussed during their talks.

These recent diplomatic engagements demonstrate the King’s continued involvement in matters of international significance during times of global tensions.
