Drivers are being warned that they must book a ” very important” test or risk facing a £1,000 fine and points. Road users across the UK have been issued a stark warning about the potential penalties, which include a £1,000 fine, for failing to attend an eye examination.

Tyre company BlackCircles said: “It is very important for drivers to have regular eye tests and, if needed, wear glasses while driving. Drivers with poor eyesight could face up to £1,000 fine and a three-point penalty.

“This is particularly important for older drivers, as eyesight can change regularly.

“Wearing certain types of sunglasses can actually add points to your licence. Sunglasses that are very dark and only transmit three to eight percent of light are illegal to wear whilst driving. This is because they can affect your sight, which is a hazard.”

“Drivers caught wearing these sunglasses could face a hefty £5,000 fine and 9 penalty points.”, reports Birmingham Live.

If the DVLA has invited you to take the required eye test, you will receive a letter from the Drivers Medical Group. This will have an ‘M reference number’ that is unique to you and a DVLA case number.

When booking your appointment at Specsavers, it’s crucial to use this M reference number so that the necessary paperwork can be requested. It’s important to note that you will have a limited time to book and attend an appointment so please arrange this as soon as possible after receiving your letter.

When it comes to DVLA eye tests, they typically include a visual acuity test and a visual field test. Only a few makes and models of field machines can perform the test specified by the DVLA to their standards and the DVLA Specsavers stores have all the appropriate machines.

Not all Specsavers stores can carry out the specific DVLA sight test. You should refer to your letter -only those stores with the DVLA-approved field machine models will be shown as an option.

Specsavers said: “If you have been referred to us by the DVLA for a driver’s visual field and acuity test, you will receive a letter with details of your nearest stores so that you can make an appointment. You will need your unique ‘M reference number’ to book an appointment, which can be found in the letter.”
