A 50p Peter Rabbit coin has been listed on eBay for £25,000 after a coin collector noticed a small printing error. In 2017, almost 20 million Peter Rabbit 50p coins were produced by the Royal Mint to celebrate children’s author Beatrix Potter.
Due to the high circulation of the coins, regular Peter Rabbit 50ps are not considered rare. However, an observant coin collector discovered something different about theirs.
On this Peter Rabbit 50p, it seems there is a small bit of metal suck on the rabbit’s foot. A detail which does not appear on any of the other coins.
The collector has since listed the unique coin on eBay, and knowing coins with imperfections sell for far more than face value, the coin is currently listed at £25,086.72.
Under the listing, the seller said: “Peter rabbit 50p 2017 coin. I believe this is an error, can’t find anything similar online. There is a lump of metal attached to the foot as seen in the photo. I’ve taken a photo of one of my regular Peter rabbit 50ps to compare. Any questions please message me.”
As well as the eye-watering price for the coin, the seller is also asking the buyer pays an additional £8.95 in postage, and returns are not accepted. And it’s not the only coin from the Beatrix Potter collection that is selling for a staggering amount.
Another 50p coin, this time with the face of Benjamin Bunny, is also listed at over £25,000. However, it doesn’t appear to have any errors that would make it rare.
The most expensive coin believed to ever be sold was the 794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar, which sold at auction for $12 million in 2022.
