Tiger Woods major championship season appears finished before it even started after the superstar golfer announced on Tuesday that he has a torn Achilles.
The 15-time major champion posted the following message on social media:
“As I began to ramp up my own training and practice at home, I felt a sharp pain in my left Achilles, which was deemed to be ruptured,” Woods wrote.
“This morning, Dr. Charlton Stucken of Hospital for Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed a minimally-invasive Achilles tendon repair for a ruptured tendon. ‘The surgery went smoothly, and we expect a full recovery,’ added Dr. Stucken. I am back home now and plan to focus on my recovery and rehab, thank you for all the support.”
The 49-year-old Woods hasn’t played tournament golf since missing the cut at the 2024 Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland.
The golfer recently has been competing in the newly-formed indoor TGL team circuit as a member of Jupiter Links, giving golf fans an opportunity to see the legend in action.
There was anticipation that Woods might have chosen to play in last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational or this week’s Players Championship, but the golfer chose not to enter either event.
In what has become part of every golf season, there was growing excitement to see Woods tee it up next month at Augusta National for the Masters, where he ended an 11-year major drought with his win in 2019.
Woods did not mention a timetable for his recovery, but it’s a near-certainty that his 2025 season is over before competing in a single tournament.
In February 2021, Woods crashed and flipped an SUV outside of Los Angeles on his way to a video shoot. His injuries included open fractures to the right tibia and fibula and he has said that amputation was a possibility in the immediate aftermath. Woods spent three months nearly immobilized before working his way back to the course.
Since that traumatic and nearly career-ending accident, Woods has played in just 11 official events, with his best major championship finish over that stretch coming at the 2022 Masters where he finished 47th.
