Liverpool have crashed out of the Champions League after Paris Saint-Germain secured a memorable penalty shootout win at Anfield after Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the game early on.

Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones saw their kicks saved by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG’s Vitinha, Goncalo Ramos, Dembele and Desire Doue all converted their penalties.

Dembele’s goal in the 12th minute of the second leg had cancelled out Harvey Elliott’s late strike in the French capital last week as the match finished 1-1 after extra-time.

The result ended Liverpool’s perfect record of progressing after winning away legs.

Liverpool produced a smash-and-grab win in the first leg but couldn’t break down PSG at Anfield.

The French side proved dangerous on the counter attack throughout the match.

It marked the first time in 40 occasions that Liverpool failed to progress after winning the away tie.

PSG’s early goal shifted the momentum despite Liverpool’s bright start.

The visitors’ attacking trio of Kvaratskhelia, Dembele and Barcola repeatedly threatened Liverpool’s defence.

The home fans created a red-hot atmosphere, baying for an opening goal but the Parisian supporters gave as good as they got – and were rewarded for their vociferous support.

PSG stunned the home crowd after just 12 minutes when Nuno Mendes played a brilliant ball out of defence to Bradley Barcola, whose cross caused chaos in the box.

A mix-up between Ibrahima Konate and Alisson left Dembele with the simplest of tap-ins.

Konate nearly made amends with a long-range effort that Donnarumma turned around the post.

Liverpool turned up the pressure in the second half, pinning PSG back.

Luis Diaz saw a close-range header somehow clawed away by Donnarumma as PSG retreated deeper but struggled to create chances on the break.

Trent Alexander-Arnold hobbled off injured, a major worry ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, as well as Konate.

Substitute Jarell Quansah nearly found the breakthrough when his header struck the post.

Neither team could find a decisive goal, forcing the tie into extra-time.
