The New York Giants now officially have a quarterback under contract on their roster.
The team announced Saturday it re-signed Tommy DeVito, who was scheduled to become an exclusive rights free agent when the NFL’s new league year begins next Wednesday.
DeVito, whose one-year deal is worth $1.03 million, has started eight games for the Giants since joining the team as an undrafted free agent in 2023 out of Illinois.
Backups Drew Lock and Tim Boyle are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents next week, leaving DeVito alone atop New York’s quarterback depth chart — at least for now.
The Giants are expected to target a veteran in free agency, with Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson possibilities.
The Jets announced last month they will move on from the 41-year-old Rodgers, who threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns with 11 interceptions while starting all 17 games in New York’s dismal 5-12 season. Wilson is scheduled to become a free agent after having a career resurgence in his one season in Pittsburgh with 16 TD passes in 11 games while helping lead the Steelers to the playoffs.
The Giants also have the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL draft next month and could be in play for the top two quarterbacks in Miami’s Cam Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.
The 26-year-old DeVito, a New Jersey native and fan favorite, will provide depth for whomever ends up the starter for the Giants.
DeVito started six games in his first season, filling in for the injured Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor, and became the first undrafted free agent rookie since 1970 to have three consecutive games with a passer rating higher than 100. He started two games last season after the Giants benched and later waived Jones, but an arm injury and later a concussion sent him to the sideline as Lock started five of the final six games.
DeVito has eight touchdown passes and three interceptions in 12 overall games with the Giants.
In the days leading into free agency, New York has also re-signed long snapper Casey Kreiter and linebacker Tomon Fox. ESPN also reported Saturday the Giants agreed to terms on a three-year deal to bring back punter Jamie Gillan.
