At long last Carson Soucy’s time as a Vancouver Canuck is over.

The NHL team had been shopping the veteran defenceman around for some time now and Thursday they flipped him to the New York Rangers.

It’s a tough finish to Soucy’s time in Vancouver; a year ago he’d been a key player in the Canucks’ strong season, where they won the Pacific Division for the first time in a decade and had an entertaining playoff run.

But this season was mostly a struggle and he became a healthy scratch at times. He’d been playing better lately but the emergence of Elias “Junior” Pettersson on defence and the acquisition of Victor Mancini, plus the likely arrival of Tom Willander later this spring all added up to suggest ice time would be a battle for Soucy.

In exchange for Soucy, the Canucks acquired a third-round pick. The pick was originally the San Jose Sharks’ but was traded to New York earlier in the day by the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas had originally acquired the pick from San Jose at the 2024 trade deadline as part of the trade that saw Tomas Hertl move from the Sharks to the Knights.

More to come…
