The initial stage of Horfield Leisure Centre’s multimillion-pound refurbishment project is complete after its brand-new gym opened to the public.

Thanks to investment from Bristol City Council and the site’s operator, Everyone Active, Horfield Leisure Centre is undergoing a complete transformation – with plans to build a new soft play area, extend the existing café, and improve the facilities throughout.

A new and improved gym is among the first of the revamped facilities to reopen, now boasting 160 stations and a newly constructed mezzanine floor, complete with top-of-the-range Life Fitness equipment and a refreshed look and feel. An all-new weights area and a brand-new group cycling studio are now open.

Several other refurbishments have taken place, including the changing areas and toilets, both of which have been revamped and modernised.

The project, which started in summer, is expected to reach completion by February 2025.

One of the next major milestones will be the construction of a brand-new soft play area, which will be placed in a new 135-square-metre extension. Set to be the ideal facility for families, it will comprise a five-metre-high, three-tier play space and a large seating area, along with a bespoke design nodding to Bristol’s most famous landmarks. This is due to be completed in February.

Further planned upgrades include a new immersive studio, new swimming pool changing rooms, a brand-new reception area and foyer, and a new café, as well as all-new energy-saving initiatives throughout the building.

Cameron Bate, contract manager at Everyone Active, said: “We are pleased to have reached our first major milestone in the refurbishment of Horfield Leisure Centre and look forward to welcoming the community back to their new and improved gym.

“Whether you are a regular gymgoer or just starting your fitness journey, this new state-of-the-art facility has everything you need to complete your health and fitness goals.

“There are plenty more exciting upgrades happening at the centre, and we will continue keeping our customers updated every step of the way.”

Councillor Stephen Williams, Chair of the Public Health and Communities Committee at Bristol City Council, said: “As a regular user of Horfield Leisure Centre, it is great to hear that the transformation of the gym area is complete.

“It is so important to stay active, and having new, top-quality equipment makes it even more inviting for people to come to the gym. I look forward to seeing the rest of the leisure centre once its refurbishment has been delivered.”
