As the UK begins to bask in warmer temperatures, it’s an ideal time to carry out a thorough spring clean of your home. The bathroom, often one of the untidiest spaces, may need some extra attention.

A common issue is limescale and hard water stains, particularly in the toilet. These chalky residues can make the room appear unclean, even when it’s not, and they can be challenging to remove.

But before you invest in expensive chemical cleaners, consider checking your fridge – you might already have the solution at hand.

According to experts at luxury bathroom retailer Sanctuary Bathrooms, there’s a popular beverage that can also do wonders for cleaning your toilet – cola. The acidity in this fizzy drink effectively dissolves limescale and hard water stains without resorting to harsh chemicals.

They claim it can even outperform these cleaning products. Plus, with a bottle of cola from Asda costing as little as 60p, it’s a highly cost-effective cleaning hack, reports the Express.

How to clean your toilet with cola

The process of getting rid of limescale stains from your toilet couldn’t be simpler. Just pour a few glasses of cola directly into the toilet bowl, ensuring the liquid covers all stained areas.

Let the cola work its magic for several hours, or ideally overnight. The acids will break down the limescale and grime.

In the morning, use a toilet brush to scrub off any lingering stains, then flush for a pristine finish. However, it’s not just your loo that can benefit from a budget-friendly bottle of cola.

Experts have suggested several other bathroom areas where other household products can be put to good use.

Shower grout

Mould tends to flourish in shower grout, making it a challenging spot to clean. For best results, apply white vinegar or baking soda and scrub with a toothbrush.

This method helps dissolve the mould and restore the grout to its original appearance.

Taps and showerheads

To eliminate limescale buildup, soak an old cloth in lemon juice or vinegar, wrap it around the taps, and let it sit for an hour. For shower heads, immerse them in a mixture of vinegar and water overnight to dislodge deposits and improve water flow.

Shower glass

An unconventional yet effective cleaning trick involves using white wine to cleanse shower glass. Simply pour it onto the glass, allow it to settle for 30 minutes, then wipe it off with a soft cloth for a streak-free gleam.
