Certain beverages can lead to dehydration, inflammation, and collagen breakdown, warns skincare expert Sam Cinkir, founder of Este Medical Group.

While skincare routines are crucial, the drinks you consume can have a significant effect on your skin’s health, potentially causing premature ageing without you even noticing.

“It’s not just about what you put on your face – what you put into your body is just as important,” Sam stated.

“The wrong drinks can lead to dehydration, inflammation, and a breakdown of collagen, all of which accelerate the ageing process.”

Coffee, a favourite morning pick-me-up for many, is one of the main offenders.

If it contains too much caffeine, it can leave your skin looking tired and dry. “Coffee is a diuretic, meaning it makes your body lose water,” Sam explained.

“Dehydrated skin loses plumpness and elasticity, making fine lines and wrinkles more pronounced”, reports Surrey Live.

If you can’t do without your morning coffee, Sam suggests limiting it to one or two cups a day and compensating with plenty of water.

Alcohol is another shortcut to premature ageing, as it “dehydrates your body and skin, leading to dryness, puffiness, and a dull complexion,” Sam cautioned.

“Over time, excessive drinking breaks down collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and youthful.”

The expert also highlighted that sugary cocktails contribute to glycation, a process that weakens collagen fibres and leads to sagging skin. “If you drink, moderation is key,” he advised.

Surprisingly, the sugary soft drinks category – encompassing fizzy sodas, energy drinks, and even fruit juices – is a major culprit for skin issues. These beverages are packed with sugars that can have devastating effects on your skin.

“High sugar intake causes glycation, where sugar molecules attach to collagen fibres and weaken them,” explained Sam. This process results in saggy skin, pronounced fine lines, and a reduction in elasticity.

To keep your skin radiant and hydrated, Sam recommends alternatives like water with a splash of lemon, herbal teas, or sparkling water garnished with fresh fruit slices.

These choices not only provide hydration but also assist in detoxifying the body for luminous skin.

“Drinking enough water daily is one of the simplest ways to keep your skin looking fresh, plump, and youthful,” Sam concluded.

By reducing your consumption of these skin-ageing drinks and opting for more hydrating replacements, you can decelerate the ageing process and preserve a glowing complexion for a longer duration.
