Thousands of homes were left without running water in parts of south and east Belfast following a burst pipe.

The disruption, which began yesterday afternoon, caused some residents to have discoloured water with many reporting no access to water at all.

Many businesses in the south Belfast area were also forced to shut their doors as a result until the issue was resolved.

Water supply has since been restored to homes as of Sunday morning.

DUP MP Gavin Robinson said as many as 9,000 homes in BT5, BT6, BT7 and BT9 were affected.

Taking to X, the east Belfast MLA said: “Spoke with NI Water – emergency work is underway to deal with a major burst pipe on the Ormeau Embankment.

“9,000 homes in BT5, BT6, BT7 and BT9 currently with no mains water or discoloured water. Estimated time for repair is 10pm.”

NI Water said the issue was caused due to a burst water main on the Ormeau Road caused by damage from “an external gas contractor.”

In a social media post, the water company said: “Burst Watermain Ormeau Road, Belfast. Earlier today an external gas contractor damaged a watermain on the Ormeau Road, Belfast.

“As a result, a section of the distribution system in the area has been isolated and rezoned to enable the repair to be undertaken.”
