Prince William has delivered his first full message in Welsh to mark St David’s Day 2025, demonstrating his growing commitment to his role as Prince of Wales.

The royal shared the video message through Kensington Palace, addressing the Welsh people in their native language.

This milestone comes after William revealed last year that he has been learning conversational Welsh.

The Prince has been using the language learning app Duolingo to develop his Welsh skills “phonetically”.

In the video, William said: “Helo. Heddiw, ar Ddydd Gŵyl Dewi, rydym yn dod at ein gilydd i ddathlu Cymru ei hanes, ei diwylliant, a’i phobl anhygoel. O’i golygfeydd anhygoel i’w hiaith, mae Cymru yn parhau i ysbrydoli. Heddiw, rydym yn dathlu popeth sy’n hudol am Gymru. I holl bobl Cymru ac i bawb ledled y byd, Dydd Gŵyl Dewi hapus.”

The message translates as: “Hello. Today, on St. David’s Day, we come together to celebrate Wales, its history, its culture, and its incredible people.”

“From its breathtaking landscapes to its language, Wales continues to inspire.”

“Today, we will celebrate everything that is magical about Wales. To the people of Wales and everybody around the world, Happy St David’s Day,” the Prince concluded.

Although William regularly speaks to Welsh people in their native tongue, this marks his first full message delivered in Welsh.

The Prince revealed in 2024 that he had downloaded Duolingo to help with his language learning.

William explained he was trying to learn Welsh “phonetically” rather than taking full-time lessons.

The Royal Family’s commitment to Welsh culture extends beyond language learning.

In July last year, the Prince and Princess of Wales advertised for an assistant private secretary who needed to speak Welsh.

The job required “specific expertise” of Welsh communities and affairs.

King Charles, described as a “Welshophile,” has maintained strong connections to Wales throughout his life.

The monarch has owned a home in Carmarthenshire, studied at Aberystwyth University, and makes efforts to speak Welsh whenever possible.

William’s dedication to learning Welsh reflects the Royal Family’s ongoing commitment to honouring Welsh culture and communities.

By embracing the language, the Prince of Wales is strengthening his connection with the principality he represents.

The video message was shared with the caption: “Happy St David’s Day from The Prince of Wales. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus gan Dywysog Cymru.”

This linguistic milestone demonstrates William’s personal investment in his role as he continues to build relationships across Wales.
