TikTok has become the go-to source for beauty, fashion and especially skincare trends – but that doesn’t mean that the advice is always correct. Skin cycling has been making the rounds (no pun intended) and has amassed nearly 30k videos using the #SkinCycling hashtag on TikTok alone, with users showing their routine, the products they rotate between as well as the results they have seen from the practice. For those with skin issues similar to the “before” photo, it can seem like a perfect solution.

We sat down with Montreal-based dermatologist Dr. Roni Munk of MunkMD, to learn more about the trend and his professional opinion.

Q&A with cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Roni Munk

Q: Let’s get right into it—what is skin cycling?

A: Skin cycling is a skincare method that involves rotating active ingredients over a set schedule — typically a four-night cycle of exfoliation, retinoid and two recovery nights before repeating. The idea is to prevent over-exfoliation while still incorporating effective ingredients.

Q:  Why, in your opinion, has it become popular?

A: It’s popular because it simplifies skincare for people who may be overwhelmed by too many products or unsure how to use actives correctly. Social media has also played a big role in spreading the trend, making it feel accessible to skincare beginners.

Q: Is this a new practice, or has it just become repopularized?

A: The idea of alternating active ingredients and incorporating recovery days isn’t new — dermatologists have been recommending similar strategies for years. I have always recommended adjusting skin care routines in different seasons and environments, as skin needs will often vary depending on the surroundings.  What’s new is the formalized “skin cycling” structure, which has made it more widely known.

Q: What are the potential benefits of skin cycling for different skin types and concerns?

A: Skin cycling may help prevent irritation by balancing active ingredients with rest days, which can be beneficial for sensitive or dry skin. However, for people treating conditions like acne, hyperpigmentation, or signs of aging, only using actives two nights a week may not be strong enough to see real progress. In these cases, a more consistent approach is needed to get optimal results.

Q: Are there any potential risks or drawbacks associated with frequent changes in skincare routines?

A: Yes – not everyone needs a rigid four-day schedule and in some cases, cycling too slowly can mean missing out on better results. People treating acne or pigmentation might find that only exfoliating or using retinoids twice a week doesn’t provide enough consistency to make a real difference. Over-exfoliating is a risk, but underusing actives can also slow down progress.

Q: What are the biggest skincare myths you wish people would stop believing?

  • “More products = better results.” It’s about consistent use of the right products, not just adding more steps. Overusing products can also lead to clogged pores, irritation and inadequate outcomes.
  • “Natural skincare is always better.” Some natural ingredients can be irritating and synthetic ones are often more stable and effective.
  • “Pores open and close.” Pores don’t have muscles – they can appear larger due to congestion, but they don’t physically “open” or “close.”
  • “Retinol thins the skin.” Retinol actually thickens the dermis over time, improving skin health.
  • “Skin cycling is the best approach for everyone.” While it may work for some, others need more frequent use of actives to see real improvement.

Q: How long does it typically take to see results from practicing skin cycling?

A: For glow and texture improvements, you might see results in a few weeks. But for acne, hyperpigmentation, or fine lines, progress takes at least 8-12 weeks of consistent active use – which is why cycling twice a week may not be enough for these concerns.

Q: Is skin cycling suitable for everyone, or are there certain skin conditions or types that should avoid it?

A: It can be a good starting point, especially for those new to actives. However, people with acne, hyperpigmentation or aging concerns may need more frequent application of actives to see real results. Those with rosacea, eczema, or very sensitive skin may need a more customized approach with less irritating ingredients, but consistency is still very important.

Q: Point blank, would you recommend skin cycling to your clients?

A: I don’t typically recommend following a strict four-day skin cycling protocol. Instead, I encourage listening to your skin and adjusting based on its response. If you experience irritation from retinol or exfoliants, taking a rest day or buffering with a moisturizer can help. I typically recommend a personalized approach that allows for more frequent use of actives when needed.

Q: Are expensive skincare products really worth it, or can budget-friendly options be just as good?

A: It depends. Many budget-friendly products contain the same active ingredients as luxury brands, so price doesn’t always determine effectiveness. However, some high-end products have better formulations or delivery systems, making them more effective. The best approach is to choose products based on ingredients and formulation rather than price.

Q: What’s the best way to build an effective skincare routine?

A: Rather than following a rigid cycling schedule, focus on a simple, consistent routine that prioritizes tolerance and results:

  1. Cleanser – Gentle and non-stripping.
  2. Treatment – Using active ingredients regularly enough to be effective.
  3. Moisturizer – To support the skin barrier.
  4. Sunscreen (AM only) – Essential for long-term skin health and anti-aging.

The key is adjusting based on your skin’s needs while maintaining consistency with actives.
