We’re all aware of the importance of regularly washing our bedding to eliminate germs and promote a better night’s sleep. Sleep experts say that cleaning your sheets roughly once every week is ideal, though pet owners or those with allergies may find themselves doing it more frequently.

What may not be as well-known is the necessity of including pillows in the laundry routine, in order to keep them fresh. Cleaning expert Jack Designs, who has over 1.4 million followers on TikTok, says that you should wash your pillows once a year.

He’s even created an easy-to-follow guide highlighting the ‘most important’ step that must not be ignored, reports the Express. In one of his latest TikTok uploads, he told viewers: “This is a reminder to wash your pillows. It’s recommended you wash your pillows every year.”

However, Jack confessed that it had been five years since he last washed his own, but post-wash, he describes them as feeling ‘brand new’. For anyone looking to rejuvenate their pillows, here’s everything you need to know.

How to wash your pillows

Begin by selecting a gentle detergent paired with a laundry sanitiser, on a 30 degree wash. As he loaded two pillows into his washing machine, Jack noted: “I’m doing two at the same time to balance out the drum.”

Pop your pillows in the washing machine, adding your usual laundry products, and start the cycle. Once washed, give them a good shake to even out the filling before placing them in the tumble dryer.

Throw in a couple of dryer balls to keep your pillows soft and fluffy. Remember to remove and shake them occasionally during the drying process.

Jack advised: “The most important thing is your dry them properly – some pillows can only be air dried, so wait till summer if that’s the case.”

Many were grateful for Jack’s advice, with one user commenting: “Thanks for the tip! ! Never actually washed my pillows but makes sense.”

Another shared: “Wash mine in summer always, I’ve noticed they dry up faster than winter.”
