Is your spring and summer calendar already filling up with special occasions? Maybe you’ve got lots of weddings coming up, or a few baby showers that you need outfits for. If, like me, you’re not very tall you’ll know the struggle when it comes to finding trousers, maxi and midi dresses.
Regular length trousers and maxi dresses come up so long on me, that I can basically swim in the material gathering around my ankles, and midi dresses look more like maxi dresses. For reference, I am 5ft, and I opt for petite clothing in skirts, dresses, and trousers. Petite ranges in the majority of retailers typically cater for people 5ft4 and under.
Between March and April I have a few events that I need outfits for, so I’ve been online shopping like crazy. Whilst scrolling online this morning I spotted a lovely coral midi dress that is perfect for summer/spring weddings and special occasions. The Coral Petite Floral Midi Dress is from Roman, and priced at £50.

Cut from lightweight woven fabric, the dress features double-frilled sleeves and a frilled tiered hem. It has a simple and modest round neckline and a flattering empire waistline. The dainty white floral print runs from the neckline right down to the hemline. The dress has an overall rating of five stars, with the majority of reviewers saying they bought it for a wedding.
One five-star review reads: “Lovely fit and great colour. Also won’t crease when travelling to a wedding.” A second also bought it for a wedding, saying: “Love this dress. Bought it for a family wedding. I am size 12 and 5 feet tall; this dress fitted perfectly. The length was midi; the material was light, and floaty, and the colour was fabulous. Would recommend for evenings or weddings.”
A third wrote: “A last-minute purchase for a family wedding, So many compliments on the colour. Lovely, light, fitting dress worn in very hot weather on the day. No creases, just hung it up and wore it to the wedding two days later. A fourth simply added: “Lovely dress, fits lovely right length for me 5ft 1.”
The dress currently doesn’t have any customer reviews with drawbacks, but there are two areas in which I think the dress’s potential falls short. Firstly, it is only offered in sizes 10-18, so it’s not inclusive for people who either wear a size below a 10 or above a size 18.
Secondly, it’s not offered in a tall or regular length option for other shoppers. It only comes in petite, which I think is quite unfair, considering other shops that have a petite range, will also offer the piece in tall and regular lengths. Elsewhere on the high street, M&S has a brilliant petite range, with plenty of trousers and jeans on offer. But if it’s dresses you’re after, I like this Printed V-Neck Midaxi number which is perfect for the beach. At £39.50, choose from sizes 8-24.
River Island also has a petite section, but it’s an online range only. If you need something for the current weather, I like this Black Tipped Ribbed Midi Dress. It’s lovely for dinners and date nights. Buy it for £39, in sizes extra small, small, medium and large. Or, buy Roman’s £50 Coral Petite Floral Midi Dress.
