A doctor has shared what “might be the best thing you can do” if you don’t feel like exercising today. Dr Mark Hyman is globally-known for his work, as well as his popular podcast, and the expert regularly shares updates with his millions of social media followers.
In a new post on Instagram, shared on Thursday, Dr Hyman said: “Not feeling motivated to exercise? You’re not alone—but here’s something that might change your mind”, before going on to explain that exercise “creates energy”.
He continued: “When you engage in physical activity, your motor cortex (the part of your brain responsible for movement) sends signals directly to your adrenal glands, triggering the release of adrenaline (epinephrine).
“Adrenaline can’t cross the blood-brain barrier, but it activates receptors on your vagus nerve, which plays a critical role in regulating both relaxation and alertness. This stimulation triggers key brainstem areas, like the locus coeruleus, to release norepinephrine—a neurotransmitter that heightens brain activity, focus, and arousal.
“This leaves you feeling more awake, alert, and energized—both mentally and physically. So if you’re feeling sluggish, the best thing you can do might be to get moving.”
Getting more exercise can also help a person sleep better, which could ward off the sluggishness and create a better cycle. However, if you are extremely fatigued, exercising is probably not the best idea.
