A 32-year-old Brampton man faces seven charges including kidnapping and impersonating a police officer in connection with an alleged incident on Tuesday.

Peel Regional Police say the victim was in the area of Bovaird Dr. and Airport Rd. in Brampton when she was “confronted by a male suspect posing as law enforcement official” who asked about her immigration status, demanded appropriate documentation and threatened her with arrest.

Police say she was escorted to her home where the man told her family that she would need to go to the police station and that money would be needed for her release.

When the pair left the home, the family contacted police.

A short time later, both the suspect and the victim — “safe and in good health” — were found.

Manjinder Kalra is charged with kidnapping, personating a peace officer, theft, and four counts of fraud.

Peel police noted in their news release that police officers are required to identify themselves when requested by a member of the public including the officer’s name, badge number and the name of the police service, as well as a telephone number for future contact.
