A south London school principal called police after a student was seen with an “alleged firearm,” city police say.

Officers responding to a school near Millbank Drive and Southdale Road East at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday learned a student had been at the school with what appeared to be a firearm, then left on foot, police said.

Police did not identify the school, but Sir Wilfrid Laurier secondary school is at 450 Millbank Dr. A Thames Valley District school board spokesperson referred media inquiries to police.

Officers identified a suspect from video surveillance footage and determined they were no longer on school property, police said.

Officers arrested a youth a short distance away, near his home, police said. A search did not yield any weapons.

At about 7 p.m., officers searched a home near Southdale Road East and Koru Court, and seized a loaded Glock 19 handgun, a 12-gauge sawed-off shotgun with a tampered serial number, a .22-calibre rifle, two extended .22-calibre magazines and 56 rounds of ammunition, police said.

A London male, 16, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with three counts each of possessing a firearm without a licence, carelessly storing a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition, and breach of recognizance, two counts of possessing a regulated firearm, and single counts of  possessing a prohibited or restricted weapon or device without authorization, carrying a concealed weapon and tampering with a firearm serial number.

The accused was held pending a court appearance Wednesday, police said.

Elsewhere in Ontario, provincial police said a teen allegedly carrying a loaded handgun, ammunition and knives was arrested Tuesday after making threats at a Campbellford high school, east of Toronto.

No one was hurt before the 15-year-old was arrested without incident at the school about noon. The school was locked down for about 10 minutes, OPP Const. James Clarke said.

The teen, from nearby Havelock, faces weapons charges, including possessing a loaded firearm, and a count of uttering threats.
