Not everything makes a good baby name.
There is a seemingly endless list of potential baby names out there, from the timeless classics that top popular lists every year to the unique monikers that help people stand out from the crowd. As a parent, there’s no right or wrong name for you to choose, and the decision mostly comes down to personal preference.
But one man has been urged to rethink the name he wants to give a child he may have in the future, as he’s been told it could set his little one up to be “bullied” in school – and maybe even in adult life. Dec, who is not currently expecting a child, made a viral video in which he said he was “terrified of the idea of getting married” because his future wife might not want to name her children after video game characters as he does.
Dec’s video, posted to TikTok, was specifically about names for children that people could use from the hugely popular Pokemon franchise. He began by saying he loved the name Cresselia for a girl, which is the name of a psychic-type legendary Pokemon that was introduced in generation four.
He then claimed that a baby called Togepi would be adorable, while also advocating for the already popular name Evie to get an alternative spelling to make it the same as the generation one normal-type Pokemon – Eevee.
But the one Pokemon-themed name Dec really wants to use for his future child if he were to have a son is Lucario – and he might have some stiff competition from one of his close friends who also loves the name.
He said: “I’ve already texted Mitch about this to make a pact, but now he and I have a bit of a problem. We both want a son called Lucario. I want to be called Lucario, let alone my son. There’s actually so many [good names], I think we need a new generational thing going on.”
Dec finished his video by highlighting the name Altaria and shouting out Shaymin as a strong, “gender-neutral name”. But commenters on the clip were less enthusiastic about the man’s name choices. Although many of his suggestions were not to be taken completely seriously, people still told him he would be setting his future children up for a lifetime of bullying.
Others, however, offered different Pokemon names that could work as baby names, including Aron, Amaura, Lunala, Kirila, and Zacian. There were also many commenters who entered joke suggestions – including one person who claimed they’d name their child Shuckle.
