Princess Diana’s ex-boyfriend has lifted the lid on Prince William and Prince Harry’s rift in a new interview.

James Hewitt, who has been open about his affair with the late Princess of Wales, claimed Diana would be “concerned” about the growing distance between her two sons.

Hewitt added that the late princess would have done “her best to try and get them together”.

He explained: “I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift, as you put it, and she’d do her best to try and get them together.”

Princess Diana admitted during her 1995 Panorama interview that she had an affair with Hewitt.

The following year, then-Prince Charles and Diana finalised their divorce.

Hewitt opened up about how discussions around mental health have changed for the better since Diana’s death.

He continued to tell ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “I think we’ve progressed and it’s seemingly possible to talk about those kind of problems now, in a way I think that’s a good thing.”

The former cavalry officer also spoke about the criminal ways Princess Diana was persuaded to sit down for the interview with Martin Bashir.

Hewitt continued: “It was a stitch-up job. It was appalling of (Martin) Bashir to inveigled, lied to her, criminal activity, absolutely appalling.

“As I’ve said, I hate bullies and bullying and arrogant people and I think it’s appalling.”

The 66-year-old was also asked when he last spoke to the former Princess of Wales before her death in 1997.

Hewitt said: “After that, just after,” referring to Diana’s 1995 Panorama interview.

Host Richard Madeley asked him: “How was that?”, to which he replied: “Distant, probably.”

Madeley probed whether it “created real problems”, to which Hewitt responded: “Yes, it did create problems, but I’m trying to move on from that, and this is admittedly personal for me to try and move on and to help as best I can.”
