Hamilton Police have started a search at a garbage dump, saying officers are looking into the possibility that a woman was killed in an apartment and removed through the building’s trash disposal system.
The disappearance of Shalini Singh, 40, who was reported missing on Dec. 10, sparked concerns about her safety and the case was assigned to Hamilton’s homicide unit.
Police are searching the Glanbrook Landfill, about 35 kilometres south of Hamilton, on Haldibrook Rd.
Investigators said Singh’s family was worried about her well-being after they last spoke at 7:10 p.m. on Dec. 4. Family members reported her missing on Dec. 10.
Police said in the beginning, Singh was reported missing along with her common-law boyfriend but he was found on Dec. 11 after attending a family member’s residence outside Hamilton.
Officers said he is not cooperating with the investigation and has provided no information that could help them find Singh.
Authorities say at the time of her disappearance, Singh was living with her boyfriend in a downtown Hamilton apartment building. Despite searching the building several times, police said officers have not located any evidence relating to her disappearance.

Homicide investigators have obtained hundreds of hours of CCTV footage from the building to trace the couple’s movements. None shows Singh leaving her building after Dec. 4.
Detectives had learned that some of the garbage from the apartment building might still be at the Kenora Waste Transfer Station. A search on Dec. 15 failed to yield any evidence.
The majority of waste collected from the apartment building had already been moved to the Glanbrook Landfill. Police said their search of the landfill will take several weeks.
