A 19-year-old woman is accused of attempted murder after a six-year-old child was stabbed in downtown Halifax on Sunday afternoon.

And Halifax Regional Police say the victim and the suspect are not believed to be known to each other.

Around 1:20 p.m. on Sunday, officers were called to the 1900 block of Barrington Street where a child was found suffering from multiple stab wounds.

The victim, who police did not release more information about, was taken by ambulance to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

In addition to attempted murder, Elliott Chorny is also charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace.

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston expressed his “outrage” about the attack.

“I struggle to fully express my outrage and sadness at learning about this attack on an innocent child in Halifax this afternoon,” he wrote Sunday on X. “My thoughts are with the victim and their family.

“The person who did this is clearly a threat to the public and should be kept locked behind bars.”
