Dashcams are becoming increasingly popular with British drivers – but as useful as they are, they could also see you facing large fines and points on your licence if they are incorrectly installed or used.

Dashcams can protect against fraud and disputes, but they can also fine you up to £1000 if you fail to inform your insurers that you have installed one. The experts at Bigwantsyourcar.com say that failing to notify your insurer about a wired dash cam can land you in trouble.

They said: “It’s seen as non-disclosure, which could result in a rejected claim if you have an accident and might even push up your premiums later. While dash cams are great for security, you need to follow your insurer’s rules to keep your coverage valid.”

The other common mistake people make when installing a dash cam is installing it incorrectly. They said: “Installing a dash cam the wrong way can get you fined up to £1,000 and slapped with three penalty points.

“According to Rule 30 of The Highway Code, you’ve got to keep a clear view of the road. Make sure your dash cam isn’t blocking your line of sight to dodge these penalties.

“Many drivers assume all dash cams are treated the same by insurers, but that’s not the case. Hard-wired dash cams change your car’s electrical system, so they’re classed as a modification – and you need to let your insurer know.”

As well as this, you need to make sure your hands are well clear of the camera when you’re on the road, as using a dashcam while driving is viewed the same way as using a mobile phone.

The experts added: “You could face a £1,000 fine and up to six penalty points. That’s why it’s so important to set up and turn on your dash cam before you hit the road.”
