There’s no time like the present to adopt Llama, a one-year-old male Holland Lop rabbit from the Toronto Humane Society.

Why? Well, February is adopt a bunny month, says THS spokesperson Lucas Solowey.

“He was dropped off by a citizen who found him as a stray and brought him into our shelter in January,” says Solowey.

“He was found on the Don Valley Parkway under the Bloor and Danforth Bridge. He’s very healthy. We don’t know the circumstances. We just know that a concerned citizen brought him, along with another rabbit named Emu, into our care.”

Personality-wise, Solowey describes Llama as an “excitable little fluff-ball who’s always ready for fun. So he does a lot of binkies, which is kind of like zoomies (for dogs) but for rabbits. He does flop over when he’s feeling extra content. He flops around and hops around.”

Solowey says the rabbit has high energy which means he loves to play. A a result, it’s a good idea to provide him with cardboard tubes or other bunny safe toys.

Llama, who has beautiful white-and-carmel colouring, takes a while to get used to newcomers and homes with dogs or cats should probably be avoided.

Soloway says small children are fine as long as they understand to be gentle with the rabbit and give him space when he requires it.

“He does enjoy being petted. He does like to warm up to new people first so slow and steady,” he says.

“A great way to win him over is to offer him some of his favourite produce by hand — like kale, lettuce, spinach, parsley, dill, things like that. And once he trusts you, you’ll really have a loyal, little friend. So he has really good behaviour.”

Otherwise, Llama is healthy and has been neutered.

Solowey says a rabbit’s enclosure size should measure at least 4 feet in length and width, and 36 inches in height.

Llama also requires “out-of-enclosure time, too, to hop around and feel at home. You just want to hide electrical wires because they can be known to nibble on them.”
