BBC Breakfast took a slightly awkward turn during its latest episode when a guest seemed perplexed by the hosts’ line of questioning.

News anchors Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt were back on the iconic red sofa on Friday (February 21), delivering the day’s headlines.

However, they hit a few snags when interviewing their star guest, Peter Schmeichel. The former Danish footballer, who also played as a goalkeeper for Manchester United, was on the show to discuss his career highlights and his new film.

Things got a bit uncomfortable when Naga questioned the sportsman about his son, Kasper, who is a goalkeeper for Celtic F. C.

Naga asked: “First thing, do you think he’s going to be better than you?” Peter proudly responded: “He’s already better than me,” as Naga interjected, Peter added: “Of course he is, he’s my son.”

But Naga probed further and said: “No, no, no! Technically, name one way your son is technically better than you as a goalkeeper.”

Unsure of how to respond, Peter paused briefly and replied: “Why are you asking me? I mean, you can’t compare.”

Asserting that Peter is one of the greatest goalkeepers of our time, the sportsman replied: “He’s playing in the modern day, it’s a different game to what I played,” while elaborating on how proud he is of his son Kasper.

But this wasn’t the only awkward moment in the interview. Charlie wanted to see how large Peter’s “wingspan” was and asked him to stretch out his arms.

However, Peter mentioned that it wasn’t the size of his hands or the length of his arms that made the difference.

The exchange didn’t go unnoticed by viewers, who took to social media to express their discomfort. One user posted: “‘Tell me one way your son is technically better than you…’ what’s he supposed to say? Naga shouldn’t be allowed to ad-lib with her questions! Stick to the autocue Naga!”

Others described the questioning as “absolutely clueless” and seemed perplexed by the line of inquiry, with one asking: “‘Let’s look at your wingspan – How is your son better than you?'”

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
