• Jeep’s new Backcountry package for Wrangler adds extra off-road chops to the Sahara 4xe
  • The most notable additions are all-terrain tires, steel bumpers, and rock rails
  • Get it while you can: Jeep is selling just 5,800 examples in all of North America

The off-road gearheads at Jeep are introducing a new limited-edition trim on the venerable Wrangler. Using the tony Sahara 4xe as its base, the Backcountry equipment package adds numerous dirt-road features generally reserved for gnarlier trims of the brand’s most recognizable model.

Aggressive all-terrain General Grabber tires are mounted on 20-inch wheels; both the front and rear bumpers are swapped for stout, steel units; and a set of rock rails are installed underneath the sills. A single-loop grille guard now sprouts from the front fascia, as does a front-facing camera to help drivers see over that obstacle which is obscured by the flat-as-a-pancake bonnet. The slick three-piece body-colour hardtop is also part of the deal.

Backcountry customers also get the Jeep Power Box, a device that can plug into the 4xe’s charging port and draw electricity from the high-voltage hybrid battery pack, effectively turning this SUV into a giant battery bank with twin household outlets to juice small appliances and accessories.

Inside, look for the nine-speaker Alpine audio system and satnav (both typically optional on a Sahara) along with a bank of auxiliary switches and ancillary gear like rugged floor mats. Pro tip: always get those extra switches, even if you don’t plan to use them right away. The convenience provided with pre-installed wiring and an ability to program the things as either constant or momentary switches – think gear like lights versus a winch – is worth the cash.

Jeep is limiting the Backcountry 4xe package to just 5,800 examples for North America, though it will be available in all existing exterior paint shades. The expressive Hydro Blue is shown here. The trim will be priced at $76,190 in Canada, which is about a $2,000 walk from a standard Sahara 4xe when equivalently equipped with the pricey optional colour-keyed hardtop and tech package. Given the level of off-road kit included in with this Backcountry, the choice is easy.
