Do you or someone you know spend an excessive amount of time on the toilet? If so, Dr. Amir Khan’s warning may be worth heeding.
The NHS GP, a regular on ITV’s daytime shows including Lorraine, has taken to TikTok to highlight a number of concerning health risks associated with prolonged loo use. “Sitting on the toilet for too long can have negative effects on your health – even if it seems fairly harmless,” he cautioned.
According to the doctor, even a seemingly relaxed, slouched position can put extra pressure on the rectal veins, increasing the risk of haemorrhoids or exacerbating existing ones. “Sitting for extended periods on a hard toilet seat can reduce blood flow leading to numbness and tingling in the legs,” he added, noting that this can also increase the risk of varicose veins in the long run.
Furthermore, Dr. Khan warned that straining too hard can weaken the pelvic floor muscles, potentially leading to difficulties passing stool in the long term. He also highlighted another issue: “If you are prone to ingrowing hairs on the backs of your legs, sitting for too long can reduce blood flow to the legs, and cause sweat and bacteria to build up in this area whilst you sit down,” he said.
“And this can irritate the hair follicles, which can cause them to grow inwards resulting in inflamed or infected growing hairs.”
Dr. Khan also warned about the potential risks of spending extended periods in public restrooms. “This exposes you to bacteria – especially if you like scrolling through your phone while you do it – as these bacteria can get onto your phone, onto your hands or even onto your face.”
So, how can one mitigate these risks? “Lower your time on the toilet to five to 10 minutes per visit,” Dr. Khan advised. “Avoid straining – if nothing happens naturally, try again later. Sometimes putting a footstool to elevate your feet can improve posture making it easier potions.”
He further recommended staying hydrated, remaining active, keeping phones out of the bathroom, and washing hands after every visit. The advice sparked a number of different reactions from TikTok users.
One mused: “Who knew there were such dangers sitting on the loo?” Another joked: “Sometimes I spend too long… cos it’s the only time I get peace at work!” A third dismissed the advice, meanwhile, stating: “It takes as long as it takes.”
However, a fourth user agreed with the doctor’s recommendations: “I have never, ever taken my phone into the toilet. The less time I spend in there the better.”
