As the UK still feels the chill of winter, the emerging sunshine might have you yearning for a European getaway.

The downside of such trips can often be the crowds – nobody enjoys being squeezed onto narrow streets alongside hordes of other holidaymakers. However, Riviera Travel has just the solution, unveiling an idyllic spot that boasts all the allure of Venice but without the throngs of tourists.

Colmar, nestled in France’s north-east, is the perfect alternative.

“Outside of the popular well-travelled destinations across Europe, there are a host of hidden gems begging to be uncovered,” said Joanne Lynn, the firm’s head of European products.

“It’s a charming location known for its combination of traditional architecture, picturesque canals and stunning vineyards. With narrow cobblestone streets and historic buildings, the city retains much of its medieval charm, creating the backdrop for an educational cultural trip. This shoulder season, Colmar is a must-visit, in my opinion.”

Often dubbed “Little Venice”, Colmar is famed for its quaint canals and colourful half-timbered houses reminiscent of the Italian city, yet it remains far less crowded. With a modest population of 67,000, Colmar exudes a small-town feel, further enhanced by its commitment to preserving its medieval architecture, reports the Express.

Notably, Colmar served as the inspiration for Belle’s hometown in the iconic Beauty and the Beast film.

Strolling through the narrow lanes of the old town, you’ll be treated to views of stunning German-style buildings and vibrant floral displays adorning the windows. The old town of Colmar also boasts a variety of independent shops and cafes, perfect for picking up a few mementos and trying out local pastries and wine.

If you’re keen to discover this charming city for yourself, Colmar is equidistant from Strasbourg Airport and EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (BSL) – both 70km away. Once you’ve decided which airport to land at, you can either rent a car or catch a train.

From BSL, the train journey to Colmar is just under an hour, while from Strasbourg it’s about half an hour.
