A hotel employee has taken to social media to reveal the truth about what really happens behind the scenes when it comes to hotel cleanliness.
For many, a hotel stay is seen as a luxurious escape from everyday life. However, a worker on Reddit’s travel forum has suggested that the reality may not live up to our lavish expectations.
This individual has shared what goes into the cleaning processes of hotel rooms, asserting that certain items are frequently overlooked during routine cleanings.
The claim began with a shocking insight: “Most hotels do not wash the big duvet, they only wash the sheets,” with the exception being at one establishment where the white duvet was cleaned only if there were visible stains.
But the disclosures didn’t end there the employee described their current workplace’s approach to hygiene as even more concerning.
“The hotel I just started at is even worse. They have brown duvets that literally never ever get washed,” they cautioned, reports the Daily Record.
The hotel worker went on to discuss various practices they’ve observed in hotels around the world. “And in Asia, I think it’s not common to have a top sheet in the bed, so you are just supposed to raw dog the dirty duvet,” they commented.
In contrast, they recalled, “At least in the hotel I worked at in Europe, you could sandwich yourself between the two sheets and not really touch the big blanket once you’re inside.”

Their frank disclosure has ignited conversations about the standards of hotel cleanliness and raised concerns among those who travel.
“Now every time I go to a hotel, I can’t touch these blankets lol. But I’m sure some are actually good and wash everything, I hope.
“The duvets aren’t the only items that remain unwashed,” they continued, shedding light on another potential hotspot for grime.
“Also the pillows underneath those pillowcases are filthy, covered in yellow/brownish spots, but I’ve only seen that here in South Korea. The ones I’ve seen in the past seemed more waterproof. I’m grossed out lol, a pillowcase doesn’t feel like enough to separate myself from that.
“And now I still wear my flip flops in the shower like it’s a communal bathroom lol.”
Others chimed in with their personal encounters, sparking further debate. One person commented: “Lol if you think the duvets are bad, think about the couches and stuff like that. Gets cleaned once a year, tops.”
Another offered a grim piece of advice based on their own experience: “I used to do network installs at hotels. Don’t ever move the beds, it’s better not to know. Sometimes it’s used condoms, sometimes it’s puke, sometimes it’s both.”
