For savvy travellers seeking an affordable European getaway, look no further than some of the continent’s most beautiful hidden gems.
Europe boasts a vast array of enchanting destinations, many of which become bustling tourist hotspots during peak seasons. But there are still several lesser-known regions perfect for any holiday type – whether you’re eager for a city break, a beach getaway or relaxing spa experience.
Travel guru Sandy Breitmeier took to her Instagram page to reveal her top three lesser-known and budget-friendly holiday spots just a short flight away from the UK – ideal for those wishing to steer clear of large crowds and not burn a hole in their wallet.
Riga, Latvia
Dubbing it an ‘underrated city break’, Sandy describes the Latvian capital as a “colourful” city dotted with cosy cafés, flea markets, vintage shops, and a unique blend of bars and art spaces. “Add Riga in Latvia to your list,” she encouraged her followers.
Nestled at the mouth of the River Daugava and set against the Baltic Sea, Riga boasts a pedestrian-only Old Town, home to the vibrant Livu Square where you can get a taste for the city’s nightlife. If dancing and drinking isn’t your thing, the Old Town is also known for its restaurants, cafes and shops.
Andalusia, Spain
While the Costa del Sol’s sunny shores in southern Spain are well-known among Brit tourists, Andalusia offers much more than its beachfront resorts. Sandy describes parts of the region as looking “like [they] could well be in Morocco” due to the rich Arab cultural influences found alongside Spanish traditions. All of this makes Andalusia “one of my favourite places in Europe,” she said.
The area is also known for its picturesque hills and rivers set against Spain’s southern coast. Seville, the capital city of Andalusia, is celebrated for offering some of the best and most wallet-friendly cuisine in the country, making it an ideal spot for a weekend retreat.
Gdańsk and Sopot, Poland
Gdańsk and Sopot in Poland are recommended for those seeking a trendy city break coupled with relaxing spa treatments. Gdańsk, located on the northern Baltic coast of Poland, attracts tourists with its beautiful architecture, with Sandy hailing it it “trendy, colourful and cool.”
Sopot, slightly more hidden away, is described as “one of Europe’s best spa towns officially,” providing a serene escape following a few days in the lively streets of its busier nearby counterpart.
Sandy opted for a spa holiday at the Marriott, but there’s a variety of tranquil spots to choose from. For those less inclined towards hot tubs and massages, Sopot also offers a vibrant food and nightlife scene – there’s something to suit all tastes.
