A roadworks project which could take up to two years to complete is set to start on the outskirts of Bristol on Monday (February 17). The work on Bradley Stoke Way will see a series of improvements take place between Aztec West and Great Stoke roundabout.

The improvements aim to make it easier and safer for people walking, cycling, wheeling (the use of wheelchairs, scooters or pushchairs) and make taking the bus more convenient and quicker. A new bus lane will be created southbound approaching the Savages Wood roundabout alongside new bus stop facilities for the T1 and 73 route.

The Patchway Brook, Savages Wood, Webbs Wood and the Great Meadow roundabouts (which is also known as the Baileys Court roundabout) will see the reduction or removal of the traffic islands along the arms of the roundabout and protected cycling and walking facilities connecting each arm. There will be a series of upgraded or new crossings at these roundabouts.

The existing shared-use cycle path will be upgraded to a two-way cycle path with segregated footway for pedestrians. South Gloucestershire Council added that the speed limit between Great Stoke Way and the Great Meadow roundabout will be raised to 40 miles per hour (currently 30mph).

Work will be undertaken in phases, starting at the bottom end of Bradley Stoke Way, near to The Worthys. As the project goes on, work will commence upwards towards Aztec West.

The council said that completion of the work is expected in “early 2027” but is hoped to be finished by December 2026. During the roadworks, diversions will be in place and the T1 and m1 bus services will be re-routed when required.

The roadworks form part of the wider project to improve cycling and pedestrian routes from the edge of Bristol towards Thornbury and Alveston. The whole project is estimated to cost £31.8 million and is funded by the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements Fund.
