Put your ears to the test with this tantalising quiz and find out if you can discern the sizzle of an egg, the creamy spread of butter on toast, or the unmistakable crunch of a nacho just by sound.
Quorn has cooked up this auditory challenge in honour of their new Cheesy Nacho Nuggs, following a study involving 2,000 adults that revealed food-related sounds can leave us feeling satisfied and hungry.
The study highlighted the most gratifying kitchen sound as the clink of ice cubes tumbling into a glass, closely followed by the hiss of hot food in a pan, the smooth swipe of butter on toast, and the gentle bubble of melting cheese.
Gill Riley, spokesperson for the meat-free brand, commented: “Our kitchen is the heartbeat of most homes, all year round it is filled with sounds and smells that we love, and even more so around Valentine’s Day.”
She added, “This definitive list of top sounds is satisfying in itself, showing how many noises we hear and create in the kitchen which make us feel content. The crunch, pop or crisp of foods helps inspire what people reach for as a snack or cook up for a family meal.”
The survey revealed that nearly half of participants think some foods taste better purely because of the sounds they make while cooking. Moreover, it showed that 21 per cent of Brits specifically select certain crunchy foods like crisps, pancakes, and stir-fries because of their sounds.
According to the findings from a OnePoll survey, there’s also a considerable appetite for ASMR-themed food content online, with a quarter of respondents enjoying listening to the sounds via social media.
Gill Riley commented on the phenomenon, saying: “The nation loves listening to and watching food content on social media, proving how satisfying the concept of a good crunch is when biting into a nugget.”
“It’s interesting to see how much influence all the senses have on what we eat. People are looking for delicious taste that comes with an equally delicious sound and smell.”
