Hawaiian cops are trying to determine how a 72-year-old Canadian woman found dead in a dumpster died.
According to police in Honolulu, the unnamed woman’s body was found at the small condo Makee Ailana building on Kapahulu Ave. in Waikiki.
It was not clear where in Canada the woman was from.
Her 87-year-old fiance notified neighbours of her disappearance around midnight on Tuesday. The man said the woman left their unit around 8 p.m. and had not returned.
Soon, the entire condo building was searching for her.
“Residents here are close-knit and always looking out for one another. Everyone is cordial and polite,” Mark Sammon, the building’s assistant property manager, told KHON-TV.
Neighbours told reporters that the woman and her fiance frequently visited Hawaii from their home in Canada.
“She was fun-loving, always looked forward to a good time. She loved to go dining at Michelle’s, and was always a happy-go-lucky person,” resident Bunnie Arth said.
Police answered a 911 call around 2 a.m. and officers also began searching for the missing senior. Cops found her body in the condo building’s trash room.
“From who I spoke with, they said the body was found directly below the trash chute and she was found in the trash bin,” said Sammon.
So far cops have not said whether her death was a tragic accident, suicide or something more sinister.

The couple lived on the building’s 10th floor and would stay in Hawaii for months at a time.
“They come here from Canada every year and vacationed a lot. They would see my dog Mellow and they were very cordial and approachable,” Sammon said.
Investigators are hoping that security cameras may provide answers.
“They are doing an investigation on if it is a suicide, which is pretty hard to comprehend,” said Sammon, adding the couple “were two very well respected individuals and it’s just tragic.”
Arth added: “It might have been because she has been on medication, had dental work done, dealing with cancer and emotionally it just got to her.”.
